Homes in Corydon

Two-century-old cellars, a creek that floods, and limestone full of caves

Corydon's historic district around the old capitol is full of limestone and brick buildings from the 1810s onward, sitting on cellars that have seeped for two hundred years. Indian Creek runs through town. Harrison County is cave country, and the ground here is karst: limestone full of sinkholes, caves and underground channels. Water moves through it fast and unpredictably, so a house can be dry for years and then get water when a channel underneath shifts or a downspout is rerouted.

Around Corydon we line and drain old stone cellars, repair cracks in later block and poured foundations that have become the way in, and encapsulate crawl spaces under the mid-century and newer homes along Highway 62 and 135. Sumps are sized for what karst ground can deliver, with a battery backup for the storms that take the power out.

Questions

What Corydon homeowners ask

Still have a question? Call the office, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Do you come out to Corydon?

Yes. Corydon and the Harrison County area are inside our service area, with free estimates.

Can an 1800s stone cellar be made dry?

Dry enough to use, yes. We manage the water with a wall membrane and an interior drain to a sealed sump rather than trying to seal stone that was never sealed.

Water comes up through the floor after big rains. Is that a crack problem or a drainage problem?

Drainage. On karst ground water rises from below under pressure, and sealing a crack just sends it to the next one. A perimeter drain under the floor edge to a sump relieves the pressure.
