Sinkhole ground, a creek through downtown and crawl spaces from every decade

Elizabethtown is built on the limestone of the Pennyroyal plateau. The ground here is karst: limestone full of sinkholes, caves and underground channels. Water moves through it fast and unpredictably, so a house can be dry for years and then get water when a channel underneath shifts or a downspout is rerouted. Valley Creek runs through downtown, and the neighborhoods that grew up around Fort Knox and along Dixie Highway from the 1950s onward, then around Ring Road and the interstates since, are mostly ranches and two-stories on vented crawl spaces and slabs.
