Homes in Hurstbourne

Vented crawl spaces under two-story homes, and a creek that floods

Hurstbourne and the neighborhoods around it (Hurstbourne Acres, Plainview, the subdivisions off Linn Station and Whipps Mill) were built mostly in the 1970s and 80s: two-story colonials and ranches, many on crawl spaces, on clay lots that were graded once and never again. The Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek runs right through, and the low streets near it know what a flash flood looks like.

The ground under Louisville is dense clay on top of limestone. Clay drains slowly, so it stays saturated against a foundation long after the rain stops, and water moves through the limestone below along paths nobody can see from the yard. The common Hurstbourne case is the classic vented crawl space: high humidity, condensation on the ductwork, mold on the joists, insulation on the ground. Encapsulation with a dehumidifier is the fix, with drainage and a sump first where the space takes on water. Homes with basements get interior drainage systems.

These guys worked hard to do a great job and they cleaned and hauled away all the debris and trash. My basement is definitely beautiful. Thank you Watertight Waterproofing.

I would highly recommend Watertight Waterproofing. From the time the owner (Zack) gave me an estimate and explained all they were going to do to my crawl space, to completion, everything went flawless. The crews were great, very professional. Thanks again…

Questions

What Hurstbourne homeowners ask

Still have a question? Call the office, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The ductwork in my Hurstbourne crawl space sweats in summer. Is that a problem?

Yes. Condensation on ductwork means the crawl space air is saturated. It drips onto the liner or the dirt, feeds mold and rusts the ducts. Sealing the vents and dehumidifying the space stops it.

Does encapsulation help with energy bills?

Usually. A sealed, conditioned crawl space stops outdoor air leaking up through the floor, so the house holds its temperature better.

Do you serve Hurstbourne Acres and Plainview?

Yes, and everything along Hurstbourne Parkway from Shelbyville Road to Taylorsville Road.
