Vapor barrier
Crawl space vapor barrier installation in Louisville, KY
A heavy reinforced liner across the crawl space floor that stops ground moisture rising into the house. The right first step for a dry space, and the foundation of a full encapsulation.

Signs you need it
When a vapor barrier is the fix
Bare dirt under the house
Dirt breathes moisture constantly. Without a barrier, water vapor rises into the house every day.
Thin, torn or dirt-covered old plastic
A 6-mil sheet from the 1990s, half buried and full of holes, is not doing anything.
Humidity readings above 60 percent
That is the line where mold grows and wood starts to take on water.
A house inspection that flagged it
Buyers' inspectors call out missing or failed vapor barriers. We fix them before closing.

What we do
Not a sheet of plastic. A sealed, reinforced liner.
We use heavy reinforced liner, not thin poly. It is cut to the space, overlapped and taped at every seam, sealed to piers and columns, and run up the foundation wall and fastened. Where the space has water, drainage goes in first. Where the vents should be sealed and a dehumidifier added, the vapor barrier becomes a full encapsulation, and we will tell you honestly which one your house needs.
- Reinforced liner, sealed seams, wrapped piers
- Run up the walls and fastened, not left loose on the dirt
- Old plastic, debris and ruined insulation removed first
- Upgradeable to a full encapsulation later

Why Watertight
The barrier is only as good as the seams
Anybody can unroll plastic. The difference is the liner weight, the sealed seams, the wrapped piers and the wall attachment, and whether the water underneath was handled first. Ours is photographed, warranted and done by the same crew every time.
- Reinforced liner only
- Every seam taped and sealed
- Upgrades cleanly to full encapsulation
4 weeks agoThis company Water Tight did a great job, they removed all of my insulation that was moisture soaked. Installed a new crawl space dehumidifier and treated for any existing mold problems. They added some steel shims to floor supports. They were very…
4 weeks agoI would highly recommend Watertight Waterproofing. From the time the owner (Zack) gave me an estimate and explained all they were going to do to my crawl space, to completion, everything went flawless. The crews were great, very professional. Thanks again…
a month agoThese guys are great. We just had a total encapsulation of our crawlspace. We had standing water underneath our house and it was causing problems. WaterTight Waterproofing came in and encapsulated everything. They put in a drain field and installed a…
Questions
Crawl space vapor barrier: what people ask
Still have a question? Call the office, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
What is the difference between a vapor barrier and encapsulation?
A vapor barrier covers the floor and stops ground moisture. Encapsulation adds sealed walls, sealed vents and a dehumidifier so the whole space is conditioned. Many houses start with a barrier and upgrade.
How much does a crawl space vapor barrier cost?
It is priced by square footage and access, and it costs less than a full encapsulation because the vents stay as they are and there is no dehumidifier. Every job is priced in writing after a free inspection, and the cost guide has typical Louisville ranges and a calculator for planning.
Can I put a vapor barrier over standing water or mud?
No. Water has to be drained first or you seal it in. We check for water at the inspection and add drainage when it is needed.
Will a vapor barrier fix a musty smell upstairs?
It fixes the biggest source of it, ground moisture. If humidity is still high after that, a dehumidifier finishes the job.
